What is a stroke? How can we prevent it?
A stroke is one of the deadliest disease. It can happen when the brain receives too little blood due a blockage and it can be caused by high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, abnormal heart rhythm and a family history of strokes. A stroke is classified into 3 types:
- Hemorrhagic stroke is a bleeding that happens inside the brain or between the brain and the skull. During the bleeding, small blood vessels near the area tighten in a spasm which cause the brain to receive very little blood. Hemorrhagic stroke is uncommon among the 3 types of strokes.
- Thrombotic stroke is a blood clot inside one of the brain’s arteries. It blocks blood flow into the brain and it can happen due to the narrowing of an artery which can be caused by the buildup of fatty deposit alongside the wall of the artery. Thrombotic stroke is the most common of stroke.
- Embolic stroke happens when a blood clot or a solid debris travels to the brain, blocking the blood flow into the brain. This type of stroke can be caused by the formation of blood clot from the heart, or a clump of bacteria or other inflamed cells.
Exercise and a healthy diet are the most important factors to prevent yourself from this deadly disease. A healthy diet includes:
- A diet rich in fruits and vegetables
- A diet, low in saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol
- A diet that includes two to four servings of fish per week
- Avoids excessive alcohol.
