Ways to Prevent from Lightning
- Avoid swimming
Water is an excellent electricity conductor. It can travel quickly underwater and lightning strikes can become fatal for anyone who is swimming in the open. It is generally advised that those in the water should get out and seek shelter quickly.
- Avoid touching metal
Metal is generally a good electricity conductor, therefore, the chance of getting strike by lightning is higher when metal is held above the shoulder. Be sure to avoid holding items such as golf clubs, fishing pole, wire fence, or any other metallic object during a thunderstorm.
- Avoid open spaces
Stay away from open spaces such as football fields, swimming pools or playgrounds. If you find yourself caught in this situation, find shelter immediately. It’s important to find safe and secure shelter. Avoid open space shelters such as tents, picnic shelters or gazebos.
- Avoid standing near windows
Wind generated during a thunderstorm can blow objects into windows, causing it to break and shatter glasses. In rare cases, lightning can come through the tiny cracks at the sides of the window as well. It is best to stay away from windows, doors and porches.
- Seek shelter
Seeking shelter is the safest way to protect against lightning, and it is advised that you seek shelter immediately at the signs of rain or thunderstorm. Make sure that your shelter is enclosed and secure, such as your home, shopping malls or your car. Stay inside for at least 30 minutes as the beginning and the end of a thunderstorm is the most dangerous.
