Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Everyone can benefit from developing heart-healthy habits. These habits can go a long way toward preventing heart disease. There is evidence some habits can even reverse certain types of heart disease.
Get regular
exercise – Our bodies are not designed to sit
at a desk or in a chair all day. We need to move to stay healthy. Experts
recommend getting up and walking at least 30minutes or once per hour to help
keep your blood circulating.
Maintain a
healthy weight –If you’re
heavier than you should be, your risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol,
and type 2 diabetes is above normal.
Eating less sugar and saturated fat,
while cutting back on alcohol, eating more fruit and veg and getting more
exercise, can all help you lose excess pounds - and keep those pounds off
in the long term.
Get enough sleep – Poor sleep habits can hurt your health.
Eat healthy and
balance – Potassium can help to lower your
blood pressure, so aim to increase how much of it is in your diet by eating at
least five portions of fruit and vegetable a day.
The vitamins, minerals, and fiber in
fruit and veg may also help keep your heart healthy.
Fruits and vegetables that are high in
soluble fiber may lower your cholesterol. This includes citrus fruits, sweet
potato, mango, and most beans and pulses.
Plant-based proteins are good for you
and also good for the planet. If you only eat plant-based proteins, make sure
to mix up your protein sources as much as possible. Soy-based proteins like
tofu are the only vegan sources to contain all the essential amino acids we
need.
Wholegrain foods will also help to
fill you up for longer and are better for your heart because they’re less
processed.
Reduce stress– Stress can take a toll on our bodies and our
minds. Stress is a fact of life, but you can reduce it and also learn how to
manage inevitable stress better. Take up yoga, learn to meditate, pray or
practice deep breathing exercises. Just taking a walk outside and enjoying the
fresh air can do wonders for stress reduction.
